Owls

Hi BAM Fans. This week I am blogging about…Who? OWLS. My mom’s friend, Cathy, is obsessed with them. She made an “I Heart Owls” blog request, so here goes.

Did you know the reason owls are able to turn their heads almost all the way around is because they cannot move their eyes? Their eyesight comes second to their sense of hearing. An owl’s eardrum is the largest of any bird and they are the ONLY birds with an outer ear. This explains why owls are such great hunters. Most are nocturnal and hunt at night. They eat small rodents such as mice and lemmings. When they catch their prey, the prey almost instantly dies because the owl’s claws spear into the animal.

There are over 150 species of owls in the world. Owls can live on average 12 to 15 years. Their typical wingspan is between 90 to 100 cm (around the size of 3 rulers) and owls weigh about 4 pounds.

I hope my blog was a real HOOT! Have an Owl-a-wishious day!
