Pygmy Hippos

Hey BAM Fans! This week’s blog is about Pygmy Hippos. I was inspired from reading an article and seeing a super cute picture of “Olivia”, the baby Pygmy Hippo in “Animal Tales” magazine. The word pygmy means small person, animal, or thing from South Eastern Africa and South East Asia. That’s where Pygmy Hippos get their names from, because they are much smaller than normal sized hippos.

Pygmy Hippos are talented and have the ability to swim. They may look big and not too friendly, but really, they are gentle animals. Pygmy hippos are herbivores and they love to eat ferns, broad-leaved plants, and fruits that have fallen from trees.

Many Pigmy Hippos are hunted by humans, or poached. This causes them to become an endangered species but zoos try their best to save them. The zoos imitate their natural habitat and breed them so when released, they will have a larger population. The zoos are also making sure that calves (baby hippos) are being cared for in the wild.

Thanks for reading and have a HIPPO-SOME day!
