Is Beyoncé a Good Role Model?

Hey guys, It’s Marley D here with your What’s Popping Pop Culture Report. This week, we are writing about Beyoncé. I have been asked to answer the question, is she a good role model? The rest of BAM is writing about her too, and as the leader I have to make an example. Let’s get started.

As you know Beyoncé is a world famous artist from Houston, Texas. She got her fame from the 90’s group Destiny’s Child. Later she became a solo artist making many albums and now she is married the well-known rapper Jay Z. On Saturday January 7th 2012, Beyoncé gave birth to Blue Ivy Knowles-Carter, the Instagram queen. Blue Ivy is a Capricorn like me!

To be honest, Beyoncé is a great performer and artist but… there’s nothing she’s done to make better life for her audience or for me.

To me, a role model is someone you can look up and has qualities that you admire. I look up to people who do charity work, don’t harm other people, areconfident, intelligent and brave. I also admire people who can do a lot of different things and do them well.

Beyoncé sings and dances well. But I want more out of my “role models”.

Truthfully, I personally do not believe in role models. I like qualities and attributes from many celebrities and business people, and people around me. I take those parts of them that I like and apply them to my life so I can become a successful, but I wouldn’t say any person is MY ROLE MODEL.

Beyoncé is a VERY popular singer and entertainer my friends want to BE just like her.  I don’t want to crush my friend’s dreams, but I want to be like me, but a better me when I grow up.

I do admire Ava Duvernay, Angelina Jolie, and other multi-taskers and multi-talented artists. Jolie directs, acts and produces. Ms. Duvernay directs writes and used to act, and she even used to do public relations work.

Sure Beyoncé has won Grammy’s, but she doesn’t seem worried about the people of her hometown. I researched online to find out whether or not she has given back to her hometown of Houston, and I found nothing. There are 6,876 homeless people in Houston! With the power, money and influence she has, she could really help all those people and at least some of that count would go away! I care a lot about homelessness. I think everyone should have a home.  Member of BAM and other girls volunteer monthly at a shelter for people who do not have a place they can call home.

Ava DuVernay is my type of person. She took on a film that was bound to be controversial and rocked it! Ms. Duvernay is new to being a big star and I couldn’t find anything online about her charity work.  But she did a movie about black people and the civil rights movement so I am expecting that she will be doing more for charity and for black people in the future.

As far as role models for black girls, I say Beyonce is not a good role model for black girls. Black girls need someone who loves their imperfections and is always driven to embrace their natural selves. Beyonce has bleached her skin just because that’s not what the entertainment industry wants. It’s disgusting to me that she did that.  I think black girls need and want help and support from their families in accomplishing their dreams like Beyonce has and always had.  But Black girls need role models who like the way they look and embrace their blackness.

In the end I think girls must be their own and best role model. Follow your heart. If you admire someone’s achievements, learn from them and chase your dreams. Show the world how powerful you actually are!
