Wicked!

Hey Guys, It’s Marley here with your What’s Popping Pop Culture Report.

Since the last time I talked with you I turned 10. Yes, double digits. I went to see the Broadway show Wicked for my birthday. It was really expensive but I am glad my mom and I went.

I really like the play. The play tells the story of Elphaba, a girl who was born green and who because of her skin is hated by her father. It follows her journey of her relationships while in college. She attended school with her sister Nessa, who she loves very much. At school she meets Galinda, a self-absorbed blondie. Despite their initial differences, they end up being roommates and eventually friends. In the story, Elphaba gets angry while at school and her anger reveals her special powers. The headmaster of her college uses these powers to her advantage. Meanwhile a stuck-up Prince joins the school. His name is Fiyero. Galinda likes Fiyero.   But Fiero forms a connection with Elffie (Galinda’s nickname for Elphaba). This connection would last the whole story.

The story has lots of twists and turns. Galinda would become Glinda, the good witch. Elphaba would become wicked even though she was not really wicked. She stood up for people and for the rights of animals. She was very sad when her teacher Dillamond, the only animal teacher in the school stopped talking.   I don’t want to spoil the ending for you. But I do want to tell you why you will enjoy Wicked.

The actors who played the monkeys were so good and athletic. They made flying look so believable. The voice of Oz was really funny. All the characters were funny, especially Glinda. The singing was really good. One of the things that really stuck out to me was how people treated Elphaba because of her skin color. People judged her negatively just because of her skin and even her father didn’t like her because of her skin.

In the end Wicked reminded me that if you are yourself and you are kind to others good things will happen. I also learned that life is full of ups and downs. Things can change quickly. But even green people can find happiness. I hope you will get a chance to see the play.

Well, that’s it for this pop culture report. Talk to you again in two weeks.
